We had a guided tour of the popes palace, which was the French Vatican for 68 years (1309-1377). Obviously it is not as ornately decorated as it must have been in its hayday, but it is very regal. More gothic than the Vatican in Rome. Some of the rooms still have the original painted walls. It was very interesting to visit this place - I didn't even know it existed!!
MAY 18 - DAY 8
Friday
AVIGNON
Avignon
We are in Daniela's home of Avignon today. Set along side the Rhone river, Avignon has two main attractions - the Avignon bridge and the Popes Palace.
The Avignon bridge (le Pont Sainte-Benezet) is a 12th century bridge that used to connect Avignon with the tower across the Rhone. It has been damaged over & over by floods and wars. The bridge was finally abandoned in the 17th century. There is now a French nursery rhyme about the bridge.
The views from Avignon were incredible. You could see for miles in all directions throughout the Rhone valley all the way to Mount Ventoux.
And guess what?! There was a market going on today in Avignon! I found the perfect glass ring to remind me of the colors of my trip. I wandered the streets, had some gelato then met the group by the carousel.
Olivier drove us to the anient Roman aquaduct Pont du Gard. Another marvel of engineering. The aquaduct carried water from natural springs dropping less than an inch every meter across France. It is about 2000 years old and still standing. Truly amazing.
I also visited the museum that uses all the senses. Pont du Gard was an awesome sight to visit. You get some exercise, education and experience its beauty.
We ended the day in Arles, our home base for the next few nights, Hotel Calendal. We had a breif orientation walk then sat down for an excellent dinner of herb covered chicken, fresh veggies & this apple pie/torte served with cream & custard that was probably better than anything I have ever tasted!! On top of the several bottles of wine I shared with some of the ladies, I was stuffed!! It was all so good tonight!!!
